The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in September and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's transfer to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative American leader President Trump, prompting him to implement a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

The former president was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, numerous his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
