The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard physical horror, but inside Together resides a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He dreads the concept of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
