They're Repeating to America What They Did with Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and characteristic moments – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. In the course of several weeks, the US president started showing all observers his intentions for a gilded ballroom twice the size of the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the East Wing portion to build it.

He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of deaths from his cuts to international aid amounts to 600,000 and growing, and recently an analysis projected his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have dared – genuinely, no former commander would have imagined – independently wrecking significant portions of the White House in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.

We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the Earth' to 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'

As confusing as it is to observe the chief executive attempt to overturn the traditional concept about democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have watched across decades as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they converted a persona of affection into a symbol of hate who blesses specifically the brutality that he criticized in scripture; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a confusing personal impact for many of us.

A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold

Hence I shall explain the Savior from my upbringing, as conceptually Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and since the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense about him since they are skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with different religions; however I believe that there are pearls of great price in biblical accounts.

It is decidedly definitely not the story of a powerful ruler emerging; instead, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to another nation to escape secret police. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his doctrine concerns compassion for other people, specifically for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and housing. Christ's response to violence is to present the additional cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a method to instruct the aggressor; his crime policy states that when an individual takes your coat you should give him your sweater too.

The apparent and direct fact that the Jesus of the gospels requests a type of extreme compassion concentrated on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christianity something of a provocative belief system: appealing to the masses, but owing to its natural unconventionality requiring to be restrained. In the fifties it was restrained via weakening – Protestantism was so prevalent that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.

A Struggle for the Highest Within Us

Hence I have become heartened to observe the steadfast resistance regarding Trump develop during the previous year. It has provided significant comfort to help build the movement that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated electorate to participate in numbers in the off-year elections. We shall require to persist with it, and with identical determination, with American flags throughout each rally and appeals to the best parts of American history.

We will be questioned ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you welcome them and welcome him or refuse?

The country is optimally secured, essentially, through connection to the best within national tradition, just as Christianity is optimally secured through connection to what makes it special and beautiful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In neither case does it mean feigning the worst of both America and religious tradition never occurred; it signifies both modesty and faith, a combination that committed national faithful should be comfortable with.
