TikTok Offers Viewers Authority to Reduce AI-Generated Content in Personal Streams

The platform is rolling out a new feature that enables them to cut down on the volume of AI-made videos appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the company disclosed that it presently contains over 1 billion content made with AI.

Testing and Rollout

The update is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a global launch. This shift coincides with a increase in AI content, fueled by emerging AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

Studies have shown that nearly 10% of the most rapidly expanding video streams on a competing service exclusively feature content made by AI. A large amount of this output is classified as “AI slop”, a term for substandard, bulk-generated content that is frequently illogical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that numerous viewers enjoy content created using AI tools, including digital art to informative clips, and we want to provide users the ability to see more or less of that, according to their own likes,” commented a platform representative.

Scale of AI Content

The platform disclosed that there are currently over a billion videos on its app labeled as made with AI. In total, in excess of 100 million pieces of content are submitted to the platform daily, making clips made by AI a limited percentage of its overall inventory.

User Control Features

Viewers will be able to reduce or increase the volume of AI content they view by using the content preference setting in the application and selecting “AI-generated content”. Other topics that currently be modified under the tool include news, style, beauty, and dance.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s rules mandate users to label lifelike artificially created content, and it forbids dangerous AI impersonations of public figures or critical incidents. Any realistic artificial content that is unmarked can be taken down under its community policies.

Furthermore, the app will now apply an AI-generated tag to content produced via its built-in AI features, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing AI-generated material. This measure is intended to stop users from seeking to evade the labeling process.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is furthermore establishing a $2m AI literacy fund for specialists and organizations to create learning resources about ethical AI use. This program will benefit non-profit groups specializing in teaching programming and robotics.

Moderation Strategy

The platform has justified its content review process, amid controversy over intentions to cut jobs for numerous review team members in the UK. The company is expected to reduce hundreds of positions in its trust and safety department in the UK capital, with worker representatives and internet security professionals voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by automated systems.

A company official explained that people-led review would continue to be important, but AI can shield workers by eliminating the most graphic content before it gets reviewed by staff. TikTok stated a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content handled by human moderators over the last 12 months due to the use of its AI tools.

It is vital to balance people and machines to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to limit contact with harmful content as rapidly, which is where a significant AI assistance is really helping us work at speed.”
